Gardening in the Gap Between the Seasons

Late summer is a time of gentle transition. The bold blooms of high summer begin to mellow, grasses start to sway in golden light, and here and there, the first fiery leaves hint that autumn is waiting in the wings. It’s a beautiful, often overlooked moment in the gardening year – where one season exhales and the next quietly draws breath.

This is an ideal time to take stock of your garden. What’s thrived this summer? Which plants brought you joy, and which seemed a little underwhelming? Are there parts of the garden you used less than expected – or areas that felt a little tired or overcrowded? It’s worth taking a slow wander with a cuppa in hand and making some notes while the memory is fresh.

Autumn is one of the very best times for planting. The soil is still warm, encouraging good root growth, and there’s less pressure to water than in spring or summer. Trees, shrubs, and perennials all benefit from getting settled in now, ready to burst into life come spring. It’s also the perfect moment to reshape beds, improve your soil with organic matter, and consider structural changes like new borders, arches, or paths. Even something as simple as lifting the canopy of a tree or adding height with climbers can transform how a space feels.

This is also the season to plan for spring bulbs – think cheerful daffodils, delicate crocuses, and dramatic alliums – and to get ahead before the garden winds down into its winter rest. If you’ve been thinking about a refresh or a full re-design, it’s a great time to begin, with plenty of scope for gentle transformation before the colder months set in.

At Planting Gems, we love working with the rhythm of the seasons. Whether you want to tweak your layout, choose plants that work harder for your space, or embrace a more sustainable, wildlife-friendly approach, we’re here to help. Every garden has potential – sometimes it just needs a new pair of eyes (and a good pair of gloves) to bring it to life.

Wishing you soft days, golden light, and a garden that brings you joy.
