Here’s the latest from Barnet Council – from local jobs and green projects to arts, culture and ways to get involved in your community.
⚡ Stay Safe with #ChargeSafe
Barnet is backing the London Fire Brigade’s #ChargeSafe campaign, raising awareness about the risks of e-bike and e-scooter battery fires. Stick to official chargers, avoid dodgy modifications, and never charge in communal areas.
🎶 Culture on Your Doorstep
Barnet will mark World Car Free Day with play streets across the borough – giving families the chance to enjoy traffic-free roads and community fun. Cricklewood Crossroads Music Festival also brought grassroots performances and workshops over two weekends, while the Recovery Film Festival at Phoenix Cinema will shine a light on stories of resilience and healing.
📸 Barnet Residents Win Photo Competition
Well done to Jane Simpson, Mike Coles and Robert Blyth – winners of the ‘My City, My Heritage’ twin towns photography contest. Their winning shots celebrate links with Barnet’s partner towns in France, Portugal and Italy.
📢 Have Your Say
The Annual Canvass is underway – look out for your voter registration form and complete it quickly and easily online. Residents are also invited to contribute to the Burnt Oak After Dark study, which is exploring how to make the area safer and more vibrant in the evenings.
💼 Jobs and Business Boosts
Over 60 jobs are currently up for grabs across the council, schools, NHS and leisure centres. Meanwhile, Barnet’s start-up programme has been extended – it’s already supported 200 budding entrepreneurs and created 30 jobs, offering free training and mentoring. The Brent Cross Town Community Fund is also offering £50,000 in grants (up to £10k each) for local projects that boost education, skills and employment.
🌳 Greener Spaces and Big Plans
Barnet is working with Thames21 and the Environment Agency on a five-point plan to improve the River Lea, covering water quality, biodiversity and climate resilience. Plans are also moving forward on a more affordable redevelopment of Finchley Lido Leisure Centre, with updated designs in the pipeline.
🗑️ Community Skips
Don’t forget – the free community skip service continues across the borough, helping residents dispose of bulky household items easily. Each household can get rid of up to three large items every three months.
