Giving it a go- Starting in Chess as an Adult Improver

Step 1: Play! No, really. Get out there and play! Let’s learn from the kids and just give it a go. The best thing you can do for your chess as a beginner is to have fun playing to get a sense for the game. If you don’t have a playing partner, go to lichess.org (no signup or payment needed), to find an online match. Don’t know the rules? Use their ‘learn’ tab for an interactive guide on moving the pieces, capturing and delivering checkmate.

Step 2: Learn. If you’ve played (and perhaps lost) a few matches, it’s time to work on your game. My advice is to learn some basic checkmate patterns. It’s how we win afterall! Here’s one of my favourites- how can white make a checkmate in two moves?

Step 3: Be curious! Try to learn something new every time you play. Lost to a tactic you’ve never seen before? Find out what it is and use it yourself next time!
