Helping Pets Cope with Osteoarthritis

As our beloved pets grow older, it’s not uncommon for them to slow down. But when a gentle stroll becomes a struggle or jumping up for a cuddle turns into a chore, osteoarthritis could be the culprit.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that affects many cats and dogs, especially in their senior years. It’s caused by the gradual wear and tear of cartilage that cushions the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Larger dog breeds, overweight pets, and those with previous joint injuries are particularly at risk.

Symptoms to watch for include limping, reluctance to exercise, difficulty climbing stairs or getting into the car, and changes in behaviour such as irritability or sleeping more than usual. Cats may stop grooming certain areas or avoid jumping onto furniture.

Fortunately, there are many ways to help. Vets may recommend anti-inflammatory medications or joint supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin. Weight management is key, as excess weight puts additional strain on joints. Low-impact exercise, such as gentle walks or swimming, can keep pets mobile without aggravating their joints.

At home, consider adding ramps to help them access sofas or beds, orthopaedic bedding for extra comfort, and non-slip rugs to help with stability on slippery floors.

Early diagnosis and supportive care can make a big difference to a pet’s quality of life. If you suspect your furry friend might be struggling, a trip to the vet could set them on the path to feeling better.
