The Muswell Hill & Fortis Green Association
Muswell Hill is a gem of a place to live, and one of its lesser-known treasures is the Pocket Park opposite the Village Green pub on Fortis Green Road. Pocket Parks are small green havens where people can relax, exercise, socialise and play. While often credited to Northamptonshire in the 1980s, some argue that Paley Park in New York was the first of its kind.
The Muswell Hill & Fortis Green Association (MHFGA) began refurbishing the park in 2023, marking its 75th anniversary, after the space had fallen into disrepair. Over the past two years, member Christine Cunliffe has overseen major improvements, including replanting flower beds, installing water butts and cutting back tree cover. Over time, the new planting will flourish, and the Association will continue to maintain this bijou space.
The MHFGA also leads the care of other local green spaces, securing funding, working with the Council and undertaking hands-on maintenance. Since 1948, the Association has brought residents, families and businesses together to help Muswell Hill and Fortis Green thrive. Membership costs just £10 a year (£25 for corporate members) and includes newsletters, email updates, meetings and an annual guided local walk.
