New Muswell Hill Repair Café to become a monthly event
In June, Muswell Hill Sustainability Group (MHSG) teamed up with repair café pros, Haringey Fixers, to launch the first Muswell Hill Repair Café (MHRC). And such was the success that they are making it a monthly event, taking place on the last Saturday of every month.
First started in Amsterdam in 2009, Repair Cafés are free ‘community centred workshops’ powered by volunteer ‘fixers’, who not only mend (where possible) broken items brought along, but teach people how to do so themselves, encouraging future fixing, supporting a circular economy, reducing waste and cheating those emission -pumping landfills. One early adopter, Farnham Repair Café, claim to have avoided 51 tonnes of CO2 emissions across 81 events.
Equally important, repair cafés provide an inclusive social hub and collaborative community. And, from day one, the atmosphere of generosity, gratitude and connection shone through the buzz of chat, clink of tea cups and whirr of tools at Muswell Hill Repair Café.
It joins over 7,000 others across 46 countries, according to the Repair Café Foundation. Which includes further monthly Haringey Fixers cafés in Campsbourne, Wood Green, Broadwater Farm and Turnpike Lane, and a thriving Bowes and Bounds Repair Café.
