Step Inside One of Muswell Hill’s Most Beautiful Hidden Gardens This Summer 🌿🌸

Who would have thought that, 30 years after first opening our garden to raise funds for National Garden Scheme charities, the very catalyst behind it all would roll up to introduce her future daughter-in-law last summer?

Dame Maureen Lipman — then Maureen Diane Turner — chose to depict our garden as “her favourite” for a celebrity auction in aid of the Museum of Garden History in 1995. The rest, as they say, is history.

Since 1996, our garden in Muswell Hill has connected us to many friends and opportunities to celebrate. We have welcomed coach parties from many continents, forging international bonds and rejoicing in a shared love of nature, even if we do not share a common language.

In a world fraught with traumas beyond our control, the health benefits of gardens are now universally recognised. Our new CEO, Dr Richard Claxton, a former GP, has encouraged social prescribing and campaigned for gardening as therapy.

King Charles III, Patron of the NGS, understood this instinctively, practising organic principles and “talking to his plants” long before we learned that plants are sentient in their own way.

In 2025, the NGS donated £3.9 million to nursing and health charities. Earl and I raised almost £10,000 by sharing our “Cornucopia of Sensual Delights” with hundreds of visitors — many of whom come for Earl’s delicious cakes, which are sensual delights too!

In 2027, we will celebrate the centenary of the National Garden Scheme. Rumour has it that beneficiaries and volunteers may be invited to a very special garden party. You do not need to live in a palace to share your garden with friends and family for a good cause — visit the NGS website to find out more.

A warm welcome awaits whatever the weather. Our plant sale is abundant, our pottery studio is open to browse, and our homemade cakes are delicious. Huge thanks go to our “Dream Team” of helpers who make it all possible.
