Community Heroes Needed: Volunteers Wanted for Local Food Bank

Since April 2020, Cooking Champions has quietly become a lifeline for many people in the local community. Every single week, the team has opened its doors to run a food bank service supporting residents who need a little extra help. In that time, thousands of people have received support, with tens of thousands of bags of fresh food and essential household items distributed to local families and individuals.

What began during the uncertainty of the pandemic has grown into a vital community service. Behind the scenes, volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly to keep the food bank running, adapting the service again and again as resources and demand have changed. Their goal has always remained the same: to help as many people as possible with dignity and care.

Today, however, the food bank faces new challenges, and its future depends on the support of the community. Cooking Champions is currently looking to recruit eight new volunteers by the end of April to help keep the service running.

Volunteers are asked to commit to just one three-hour shift a month. The food bank runs every Thursday, with a morning shift (9am–12pm) and an afternoon shift (12pm–3pm) available. The role includes helping to set up the food bank, assisting with food distribution, and guiding visitors through the process. While the role does involve some light lifting, full training is provided.

Volunteering is not only a chance to support those who need it most, but also an opportunity to meet new people and be part of something truly meaningful. The team is also asking the local community to help spread the word—perhaps a friend, family member, neighbour, or colleague might be interested in getting involved.

A few hours of your time each month could make a real difference to people in the community.
