Building Confidence, One Child at a Time
I began working at Mathnasium of Crouch End when it first opened in 2018, during my gap year, as a Maths Instructor. I was actually the first instructor hired!
I was quite nervous at first. I was only 18, and it was my first proper job. But by the end of my first week, I realised how much I loved teaching maths to children — helping them work through challenges in a calm, encouraging and enjoyable way, and seeing those little moments when something suddenly clicks.
After my gap year, I went on to study Psychology at the University of Warwick, where I particularly enjoyed Educational Psychology. My experience at Mathnasium gave me a real-world foundation for many of the theories I was learning. I had already seen how confidence, motivation and the right kind of support can completely change the way a child feels about learning.
In 2022, I began a Master’s degree in Clinical Neuroscience at UCL. I worked in a research lab exploring neural connections in epilepsy, which was fascinating, but I found myself missing the energy of working with children and the fun, positive atmosphere at Mathnasium.
In September 2023, I joined Mathnasium Muswell Hill full-time, and less than two months later I was promoted to Assistant Manager. This was a major step for me. I began developing skills I never imagined I would enjoy, including managing a team, marketing, staff training and recruitment.
A year later, I was offered the opportunity to become Centre Manager. It has been a challenging role, and definitely a huge learning experience, but one I am really growing into. I feel very lucky that I genuinely enjoy coming into work each day.
One of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing children with very different personalities and abilities begin to feel more positive about maths. Some arrive feeling nervous, frustrated or convinced that they are “not a maths person”. Over time, with the right encouragement and a programme that meets them where they are, we get to see their confidence grow alongside their skills.
I also have lovely conversations with parents every day, who tell us how valuable the sessions have been and the impact Mathnasium has had on their child’s confidence, attitude and ability. It is incredibly rewarding to know that the work we do day to day can make such a positive and tangible difference.
When I started as a young instructor in 2018, I never imagined that one day I would be managing a centre myself. I owe so much of my personal and professional growth to the training and support I have received, and to the genuinely enjoyable, encouraging and ambitious working environment at Mathnasium.
